Unit II Case Study

For this assignment, locate a court case involving a hotel or motel and refusal of guests for any reason. You may use the CSU Online Library or another source to locate a case. Please be sure the document your source using APA Style. Once you have read and understand the case, write a three- to five-page paper following the directions below.

The format will be according to APA Style (typed, double-spaced) and in four parts:

  1. Part 1 is a summary. In this segment of the paper, provide an in-depth summary of the court case. Include what precipitated the case. This summary should be in your own words, using quotes to support what you have written.
  • Part 2 presents the arguments. Here, you should present the arguments made in the case. Essentially, you will discuss what the attorneys for the plaintiff and the defendant argued for their respective client(s).
  • Part 3 presents the outcome/ruling. Discuss the outcome and ruling. You should include the ways the court used the arguments of the parties to create their ruling, opinion, or verdict.
  • Part 4 presents your reaction. You are to provide your reaction (insightful, critical, and logical) to the points made in the case including the ruling, opinion, or verdict. A simple statement of agreement or disagreement is not enough. While you may make such a statement by way of introduction to your reaction, you must clearly and logically state the reasons for the position that you have taken.

Unit IV Article Critique

You are required to read both articles provided below. Once you have read both articles, choose one of the articles, and complete and submit an Article Critique. There is no absolute minimum or maximum requirement for your critique.

Fleck, R. K. & Hanssen, F. A. (2008, January). Why understanding smoking bans is important for estimating their effects: California’s restaurant smoking bans and restaurant sales, Economic Inquiry, Volume 46, Number 1, 60-76. 

The format will be according to APA Style (typed, double-spaced) and in three parts: 

  1. Part 1is the identification of the article. What is important here is that you provide the reader with enough information about your article so that he or she will be able to locate the article. 
  • Part 2is a summary. List the main points that the author has tried to establish (i.e., 1, 2, 3, 4, 5; or first, second, third, fourth, fifth). There normally will be three to five main points. If you are summarizing a court case, you should discuss the following: What provision of the law was at issue? Briefly state the facts of the case. What legal tests were applied? Were there any unusual elements in the case? Include all major key points made by the author. If the author addressed any major concepts or methodology, this should be explained also. 
  • Part 3is your critique. You are to provide your reaction (insightful, critical, and logical) to the points that the author tried to make or an overall critique of the entire article. A simple statement of agreement or disagreement is not enough. While you may make such a statement by way of introduction to your reaction, you must clearly and logically state the reasons for the post that you have taken. If you are summarizing a case, your critique should address whether or not you agree with the court’s reasoning and decision and why.
