Hydraulic Fracturing. Where did it come from? How did we come up with this technology of shooting water and chemicals into a deeply drilled hole to “shake- up” the shale to extract this fossil fuel? Although this is a technology that has been around since the late 1940’s, its roots in previous technologies are not clear. I have been able to find a few ways that natural gas was extracted for use and I will go over them and see how fracking may have been brought about from this. What I have found is natural gas extracted from coal, vertical drilling, and something called the Torpedo. All of this looks to be the technology used before fracking was created in the late 1940’s. This timeline can start at 1000 BC in Greece where they built a sanctuary over an open fissure. This sanctuary, where the Oracle gave her prophecies that were somewhat cryptic in nature, was known as Delphi.
