It helps to remember the initials “SOLER M” when engaging in nonverbal following.
S…quarely facing interviewee
O…pen posture
L…eaning forward
E…ye contact
R…elaxed
M…oderate physical distance
Remember to use the 3 V’s.
-Visual Eye Contact: if you are going to talk to people look at them.
-Vocal Qualities: vocal tone and speech rate indicate clearly how you feel about another person.
-Verbal Following: the client comes to you with a topic of concern, don’t change the subject, stick with the client’s story…keep on track!
Describe a situation where you used verbal and/or nonverbal following. Did you apply SOLAR M? Did you use the 3 Vs? Could you tell if the other person was interested (or following) what you were saying? Please explain.
