Sacred Places Project
For this assignment, you will journey and help your reader journey to a sacred place real or imagined. Using Microsoft Word, you will write a detailed trifold travel guide to this place. Imagine that your reader is a mythology enthusiast and seeker of the sacred who wants to understand not only the place but its mythological/sacred significance. Your finished travel flyer should address the following:
The mythological origins of the place. Give your reader a sense of the mythology behind the place. With which gods/ goddesses is it connected? What famous adventure/encounter happened there? See pgs 321-322 for Guilliford’s Nine Categories of Sacred Places.
Sacred objects associated with the place’s mythological origin. Examine the symbolism of those objects and how they might still be used presently. For example, if you were visiting the Mahabodhi Temple in India, you might discuss Buddha’s Bodhi tree.
The contemporary relevance of this place. What significance does this place still hold for people who live there? What significance does this place hold for a contemporary visitor?
Any important information related to etiquette/dress when visiting the place. For example, visitors to the volcano on the main island of Hawaii should not take back any volcanic rock or else they will encounter the wrath of Pele.
Besides addressing the above, feel free to incorporate any other details you feel are relevant. Your finished travel trifold should be two complete pages. It should include photos and text. Your overall goal is to entice a reader to visit that place. Make sure that all your wording is original. Make sure to attribute all your sources (this means giving credit to where you got your information and the photographs). You may use a formal academic citation system such as MLA/APA or you can create a digital document and hyperlink to the sources. To help organize your piece, you might consider having headings to guide your reader. In other words, your finished product should look more like a travel guide/travel piece than an essay.
Grading Criteria: Resembles a travel guide in terms of tone/design (doesn’t read like an essay): 15 points
Gives the reader a sense of the mythology behind the sacred place: 30 points
Includes information about why this place is still relevant today: 20 points
Includes visuals to help the reader picture what is being described: 20 points
Attributes all information/source material used: 15 points
**Points will be deducted for patterns of writing errors (eg. grammar, punctuation)
