  Delivering Food

 One evening in July 2005 Andy Roddit called White Lilly Restaurant and ordered Chinese food to be delivered to his home. However, the restaurant manager, Peter Sams said that he would have to come to the restaurant to pick up his food. The Roddits, who are black, live in a high-crime, predominately black neighbourhood in Chicago, USA. Mr. Roddit complained that the refusal to deliver was an act of blatant racism, and according to his grandmother, “It can only be because we are black people.” Peter Sams, the manager of the White Lilly Restaurant, asserted that the issue was one of employee safety since several food-delivery people had been murdered while marking deliveries, and were often robbed and assaulted. White Lilly Restaurant’s and most other restaurants use computerized systems that designate neighbourhoods as green, yellow, or red. Customers in green neighbourhoods get food delivered to their door; in yellow neighbourhoods customers must come out to the street and get their food from the delivery car; red neighbourhoods are those considered too dangerous for any home delivery at all, and customers in these areas must drive to the restaurant for their food. Because red marked neighbourhoods are almost always minority neighbourhoods, the American Civil Liberties Union criticized this food delivery practice as discriminatory. The Chicago Restaurant Association asserted that the practice was part of the employer’s legal and moral duty to eliminate workplace hazards.
