Needs Assessment for Stroke Services in Ontario, Canada

When a community or institution desires to determine, the medical services required by the population, a needs assessment is required to be performed which will determine the level to which current resources are meeting the needs of the population in question and ascertain whether new programs or resources are required to fill the unmet need. The Queen’s Health Policy Research Unit (QHPRU) is tasked with assessing the need for stroke services in the Canadian province of Ontario. There are various methods the QHPRU could employ to meet its informational needs, some of which include a key informant survey which is seeking the opinions and observations of knowledgeable people such as clients, public officials and others. The research unit could also employ demographic analysis from existing sources including the Canadian Heart Health Survey and Ontario Health Survey. The data is readily available and is relatively inexpensive. Another method that can be utilized is the inferential indicator method, which takes current data sets from published and unpublished sources such as government, insurance companies, and other sources to make inferences regarding the needs of the population.
