Using the Process of EBP to Assess a Clinical Question or Problem
Directions: The activity can be individual or in groups, sorted by clinical group

Clinical Objectives:
1. Identify a clinical practice question or problem
2. Explore the literature to find evidence to answer your question.
3. Share the information with classmates
Clinical Activities:
1. The students will present their findings.
2. The student will post the information on the college’s online platform (e.g. shared files) to make available for all students.
Project Objectives:
1. Identify a clinical question and use the PICOT format.
2. Obtain an agency practice protocol related to the clinical question.
3. Review the evidence using multiple resources of evidence to research the clinical practice protocol and evaluate across the nursing continuum to solidify rationale(s) for the EBP.
4. Discuss your search strategy for finding the evidence
5. Use an annotated bibliography for the research articles.
6. Prepare a written and oral presentation of findings.
7. Provide suggestions to translate evidence into layman terms to increase compliance of protocol in the practice setting.
Grading Rubric:
1. Write an evidence-based practice (PICOT) question related to your Patient Care Protocol. Discuss the significance of this question to nursing practice
(10 points)
2. Review the evidence (research, systematic reviews, and clinical practice
guidelines) on your question (a minimum of 3 maximum of 5) articles must be included (please include articles in return of the order). These articles must include at least 3 research studies. Discuss your search strategies for finding your evidence on CINAHL, Medline and other databases. It is expected that you also search review databases such as Cochrane, Johanna Briggs, and for Practice Guidelines from AHRQ. (Search strategy description – 10 points)
3. Create an annotated bibliography on the all of your articles. See example on the following page. You must turn in a copy of all articles with
your project. (Bibliography – 20 points)
4. Write a brief synthesis summary of the findings of the articles with APA
This paper should be 4-8 pages long and must be a synthesis and not just a linking of abstracts. The paper must be in APA format and college level quality in terms of grammar, punctuation, and spelling. (Synthesis -20 points)
5. Answer the following Consistency of Evidence Questions: (USE THESE FOR POWER POINT PRESENTATION)
1. Are there replications of studies with consistent results?
2. Are recommendations consistent among systematic reviews, evidence-based practice guidelines, and individual studies?
3. Are there identified benefits to the patient for applying evidence-based
practice recommendations?
4. Are there identified risks?
5. Have cost studies been done on the recommended action, intervention, or treatment? (15points)
6. List the process to implement your recommendations for evidence-based practice at your clinical facility. (10 points)
