1. Based on what you have seen in the movie and on what you have studied in this course, do you think Goldman Sachs should be punished for its behavior in the last few years? If so, what would be the appropriate punishment? Why?
2. According to Kohlberg there are five stages of Moral development. Can these stages be applied to a corporation or large corporation like a public accounting firm? Explain and provide examples.
3. Regardless of your answer to the above question 2, based on the movie “Inside Job”, where would you place Goldman Sachs in Kohlberg’s framework? 4. Inside Job appears to suggest that the leaders of high finance and high government are the antagonists in the global financial crisis and are most responsible for selling out the world to the insatiable specter of financial degeneration. Whether or not you believe this, after watching the film what responsibility does the public (consumer) have in this unfortunate set of events.
5. Financial Services Roundtable, which lobbies on behalf of the top 100 banks, and credit card, insurance and financial services companies, — including many of the bailed-out banks. The ethics policy of the Roundtable, which members are asked to sign, indicates members are expected to set the highest ethical standards for the industry. “Fairness and Respect,” is one of the principles: “we will treat people with respect and prohibit practices that do not provide a benefit to our customers or have the effect of taking unfair advantage of our customers….” Discuss (with examples from the movie) ways in which this Roundtable ethics policy was violated.
6. Ferguson contends in his movie that arrogance, greed, conflicts of interest, unethical behavior, lack of transparency, failed leadership, and no accountability are the antithesis of a model for sustainable business success. In your opinion after watching the movie what specifically could have been done to prevent the meltdown? (It is not necessary that you fully understand the financial technical aspects to answer this question) 7. In the movie “Inside Job” it was pointed out that the larger the loan, the larger the commission; therefore, lenders lent excessively and everyone profited for trading the loans, until it came time for the loans to be repaid and there was not nearly enough money to repay them. When it did come time for the debts to be repaid, many of these trading firms had debts that were many times larger than
their available funds and were heading for bankruptcy. Many of these firms were then labeled as too big to fail, because they managed magnificent percentages of money in the global financial system – if these firms fell, the global financial system would fall as well, it was said – and thus, many of these firms were bailed out by the government – using the people’s money, in the form of taxation or money creation (hidden taxation known as inflation) – amounting in the hundreds of billions of dollars. Explain why, or why not, the bailout was an ethical solution? 8. Why do you think Goldman Sachs et al lobby to have regulations removed? 9. A final example of selling out that Inside Job covers, is of various heads of firms in the financial sector selling their stock in the company shortly before the company collapsed, because they knew the company was collapsing and they could cash out before collapse. Discuss from your point of view what was wrong with these actions since many of these individuals did not make policy decisions for the collapse of the industry they worked in? How do you feel about this statement? What would you have done in this situation? 10. After watching the movie was there in any way a moral hazard was at play in the meltdown. If so describe what the moral hazard was? Or, describe why a moral hazard did not exist.
