Living in Germany has been a great experience, but when you’re fresh out of high school and don’t want to leave the tranquil German village you live in, your college options become limited. You then have to pick from 3 or 4 colleges which consist of online and face to face classes. Being one among the few nineteen year olds that don’t know how to drive, online classesbecome your best friend. Which leads you to becoming a pro who can spot the limitations of being in an online class rather than being in a face to face class.The Case Against Online LearningBeing a college student who takes online classes and the occasionally face to face class I was quite interested in Author Kate Kiefer’s, a writing professor, article, Chapter 8: “Do StudentsLose More than They Gain in Online Writing Classes?” In this chapter Keifer brings up three reasons for why online writing classes, in her opinion isn’t giving the students what they need compared to if they were taking a face to face writing class. These three reason are classroom support software, students’ time constraints, and “market” models of education (Kiefer, 2007). Keifer is upset with online classes and would prefer to teach face to face classes because she believes that online classes do not provide students the same valuable interactions that they would receive if they took face to face classes. In the essay, Do Students Lose More than They Gain in Online Writing Classes?By Kate Kiefer, from the publication of Brave New Classrooms(pp. 141-151), Kiefer states her concern for students whether they are benefiting from on-line based educational platforms. Kiefer focuseson the subject of writing using the on-line platforms and how it may not be teaching all that writing properly entails. While online education is becoming increasingly more popular Kiefer feels that it is greatly flawed. From a standpoint of an instructor, she touches base on the size of each class, how impersonal interactions between students and teachers are, problems with the software support, and time restraints for students. In my personal opinion there is definitely something to be lost with the online based educational platform however it does have its finer points too. I agree with quite a bit of what Kiefer says, but there are things that I think are left out. I enjoy and do best with online classes as I am taking an online writing class now. However there are benefits that one can only receive with face-to-face interaction between student and teacher.There is much to question about on-line learning and its effectiveness. One large issue is the student to teacher ratio. In her article Kiefer states “teachers of writing insist that students arebest able to learn to write most effectively when they can create and respond to specific languagecontexts in small groups of students (15–25 students in the class as a whole, with smaller groupings of 2–5 students working on targeted collaborative activities).” (Kiefer, 2007) The more students within a class the less individual attention each student receives from the teacher, which in the long run is setting the students up for failure. “According to the Amer
