COM 430 Leadership in Group Communication
The goal for your case study paper is to create a case study that effectively describes, analyzes,
and reflects leadership communication concepts from units 1-6.
Requirements
At the end of each chapter, the authors present a case study that synthesizes and describes the
concepts from the chapter. Each case study is followed by a series of questions that prompt you
to analyze and reflect on the case study and apply the concepts from the chapter. Case studies
give you an opportunity to apply course concepts and leadership theories to real-world examples
by describing a particular practice, problem, scenario or situation and utilize course concepts to
analyze and evaluate the case. Your goal is to effectively present a case study by illustrating a
real-world practice, problem, scenario or situation related to leadership concepts from units 1-6.
You will need to clearly summarize and define the practice, problem, scenario or situation,
analyze it using course concepts as evidence for your claims, and debrief it through reflection
offering the next steps. To successfully fulfill the requirements for this assignment you must
complete the following steps:
Step 1: First, you will gather all of the necessary information about your case. Choose and
research a real-world example (person, group, or organization) that presents a particular practice,
problem, scenario or situation related to the leadership concepts described in units 1-6. You
should identify 3-5 specific concepts that are present to ensure the example will be sufficient for
your case study. Utilize the case study examples at the end of each chapter to guide you in
finding an example and in further understanding how each example exemplifies the concepts of
the chapter – both as “best practices” and/or as a critique.
Step 2: Write a 2-3 page case study (not counting cover or reference pages) clearly defining and
summarizing the practice, problem, scenario or situation and analyze it using course concepts as
evidence for your claims. Your essay must contain the following sections:
1. A brief introduction explaining the person, group or organization you selected for your
case study. The introduction essentially briefly summarizes the person, group, or
organization and briefly presents the practice, problem, scenario or situation. Review the
first paragraphs of the case studies provided in the book at the end of each chapter for an
example.
2. A thorough discussion summarizing and synthesizing the practice, problem, scenario or
situation related to leadership utilizing course concepts throughout demonstrating a high
level of understanding and application of course material. Use the case study examples at
the end of each chapter for examples of how you might write this up. The only difference
is you will be utilizing specific course concepts throughout. Here you are answering the
“WHAT?”
a. NOTE: We expect multiple in-text citations from chapters 1-6 of your textbook
along with multiple references from the support materials from units 1-6 to offer
2
support for your case study. In this section you are demonstrating that you can
synthesize the practice, problem, scenario or situation and utilize course material
to convey your knowledge and understanding about leadership communication
into a well-considered write-up of the case study.
3. A thorough analysis of the practice, problem, scenario or situation related to leadership
utilizing course concepts as evidence for the claims in your analysis. Use the questions
provided by the authors at the end of each case study to help generate ideas for analysis.
Here you are answering the “SO WHAT?”
a. NOTE: We expect multiple in-text citations from chapters 1-6 of your textbook
along with multiple references from support materials from units 1-6 to offer
support for your analysis. In this section you are demonstrating that you can
analyze the practice, problem, scenario or situation and utilize course material as
evidence in order to convey your knowledge and understanding about leadership
communication into a well-considered analysis of the case study.
Step 3: As part of your 2-3 page case study (not counting cover or reference pages), you will
debrief your case study by writing a 1-2 paragraph reflection that essentially asks the question
“NOW WHAT?” Use the questions provided by the authors at the end of each case study to help
generate ideas for suggesting next steps. Here you are answering the “NOW WHAT?” You will
then offer a brief conclusion that summarizes your case, analysis, and next steps.
Paper Parameters
Your essay should adhere to all APA style formatting guidelines: a cover page, 12-point font, 1”
margins, double-spacing, properly formatted in-text citations, and a separate reference page at
the end of the document. Your essay should not contain spelling or grammatical errors.
Grading Criteria
Grades will be based on the following considerations:

presented (“WHAT?”)
• Analysis of the practice, problem, scenario or situation utilizes course concepts (“SO
WHAT?”)
• Debrief is reflective and utilizes course concepts to offer the next steps (“NOW WHAT”)
• Demonstrated comprehension and integration of course material (synthesize your ideas)
• Strong writing in your essay, including a thorough use of citations to support your
