Application of Technology in Nursing and Patient Education Essay

Today, technology has been increasingly used in nursing education to support and enhance the teaching and learning experiences of faculties and students. Nursing faculty should create education, training, and work environment that supports the adoption and use of the latest technologies to address the core needs and priorities of the nurses as well as the patients. Nursing students seek for guidance to mobilize technology to make appropriate evidence-based decisions, communicate effectively with health care team members, and measure nurse-sensitive patient outcomes (Nibert, 2012). Students should have access to different types of technologies such as ebooks, simulations, various apps and online guides (Alvarez, & Dal Sasso, 2011). This paper comprehensively describes the effects of simulation in nursing education, its significance, advantages and disadvantages, and relation to the standards and competencies of nursing profession.

Effects of Simulation in Nursing Education

Utilization of simulation in some form in nursing education to teach principles and skills is not a new concept. Currently, there is an increased interest in the use of simulation as a clinical teaching tool as a result of the development of high-fidelity human patient simulator. High-fidelity simulation (HFS) is a computerized, interactive, and life-sized manikin that can be programmed to get the effects of real life scenarios. Students will receive instructions on theoretical principles and information via didactic methods followed by application of the knowledge through a simulated environment. The learner will be engaged as a participant, observer, and evaluator. HFS has been used to expand clinical learning, critical thinking and psychomotor learning opportunities for the staffs and students in low- and high-risk clinical environments. Regardless of prior skill level, students can improve their proficiency by using simulation (Richardson, & Claman, 2014).

Significance of Simulation in Nursing Education

Traditionally, nursing students learn their skills at the bedside on real patients. However, these patients are potentially at risk when an unskilled student provides care. Taking care of sick patients under the supervision of a preceptor or an instructor is an intimidating task for many students. Nursing students’ clinical rotations have been profoundly restricted by a decrease in number of nurses willing to precept, an increase in student-to-faculty ratio, and safety consideration for high acuity patients. All these barriers limit a student’s opportunity not only to perform skills but also to exercise critical thinking skills, and interact and work with physicians and other multidisciplinary teams. Therefore, schools of nursing have been using alternative methods such as role-play model of instructions in which a classmate or an actor will act the role of the patient. This method has many limitations including inability to present specific manifestations of certain disease conditions such as irregular heartbeat. This also can pose risks for the safety of patients as well as for the learning of students. As an alternative option, high-fidelity simulation (HFS) model is widely utilized in nursing education.
