Family Nurse Practitioner

The role of the family nurse practitioner is the clinical path I have chosen to pursue on my career journey. This is a clinical role that promotes patient safety according to the National Patient Safety Goals for 2016 of identifying patients correctly, use medicines safely, prevent infection, preventing falls, and identifying patient safety risks (The Joint Commission, 2016). The future of the health care system will highly rely on the family nurse practitioner as a source of primary care. With the decline in the amount of medical students going into the family medicine role there is a growing market for the family nurse practitioner role (Hamric, Ann, Hanson, C., Tracy, M. F., and O’Grady, E., 2014). As The FNP focuses on the care of the entire family from the young to the elderly. However, while all states regulate the degree of autonomy of Physician Assistants (PA) and Nurse Practitioners (NP), state laws in select areas of the country still restrict PAs and NPs from practicing to the full extent of their training (Hooker, Roderick S., and Ashley N. Muchow, 2015). This paper will summarize a research article that will support the cost effectiveness of lifting these state laws. It will follow with a summarization of a research model to investigate collaboration between nurse practitioners and medical practitioners.
