Agency Overview/ Historical origins of the agency:The facility that I am placed at for my field practicum is called Mary’s OutreachCenter. Mary’s Outreach Center is located in Rochester; New York and has only been inbusiness for six years. Initially this program only passed out clothes to about a dozenRefugees. Those refugees who received clothing from Mary Outreach Center started totell others about the clothes that they were receiving, which brought dozens of otherrefugees. After about one year of being housed in a small room, Mary’s Place moved intoa historical catholic church built in 1917, because they started to have too many peopleand not enough room to service them. The church was gutted out on the inside, besides aselect few of things that Mary’s Place was under strict orders not to touch because theywere considered holy. Although Mary’s place is housed inside of a church there are noreligious practices being conducted inside of the church or by Mary’s Place. Mary’s Placeis not a church it’s a program that is housed in a church.Since the transition into the church Mary’s Place has increased the amount ofservices they provide to refugees. In the beginning Mary’s Place only provided clothes torefugees and nothing more. As of today Marys’ Places provides clothes, casemanagement, counseling, food, jobs, and many other services to refugees and thecommunity. There is not a select number of services that Mary’s Place provides or doesnot provide. Mary’s Place assists people with whatever they need help with. Currentlythere are only three official paid employees; Mary’s Place also has forty WEP workersthat are also refugees provided by the state to work in the church. Everyone else isvolunteers, and interns, in total Mary’s Place has fifty-seven staff members.Agency mission
