FP4001 Assessment 3 – Technology to Improve Outcomes
Healthcare in rural areas has always been a challenge. Geographically, monetarily and physically the accessibility of care and treatment has created areas where quality and quantity of life is less than desirable. To improve the quality of life, and reduce the occurrence of hospital re-admissions in rural areas, we will look at tele-medicine, or remote patient monitoring.

This technology-driven vehicle of healthcare can help rural patients and their limited healthcare providers improve outcomes following discharge from the hospital or home health services. Challenges to Providing Healthcare in Rural Areas Accessibility – Changes in travel habits and accommodations over the years has affected populations in smaller, urban areas of the country.
Smaller cities, sometimes called “off-market” or “secondary market” areas, now offer air travel options at lower prices which decreases the amount of people who used to drive to these locations. Large rest stops and commercialized commerce centers along these travel routes has reduced the need for more rural areas to connect those travelers driving from place to place.
With this comes the disappearance of hospitals and clinics outside of these areas, since they can no longer support the staff needed to function. The domino affect is then the medical facilities move to the large city areas, further from the rural locations.
All of this removes access to healthcare for the population still living in the rural areas. (Rickets, 2016) Connectivity – The ability of the patients’ to receive care is dependent on the connectivity of the area. With advances in technology, the problem becomes accessibility to communication devices; i.e. mobile phones, computers, and wifi.
The establishment of these lines of communication are determined by the number of users in any given area. Rural areas with low

Making phones, tablets and computers that are simple to learn and easy to teach is an important step in helping healthcare advance into the next century. (Radhakrishnan et al., 2016) Affordability – The types of transmissions of data and videos requires increased data speeds as well as cameras capable of providing the resolution required for patient information to be assessed appropriately.
