Essays: Your answer will need to be both well written and explain your ideas in some detail. There should be examples to support your position. The answer should be a few paragraphs long.
– How would you compare the styles of detective work and ethics of Sherlock Holmes to any of our four Film Noir “gumshoes” (detectives)? Have at least two points of comparison of their methods from each case (so Sherlock and just one Noir detective).
– What are the distinctive characteristic of Film Noir movies, in such issues as the recurring types of characters, the plots lines, and/or the look of the films? Have at least specific qualities and examples of them from more than one of the Noir films we watched.
– How would you compare and.or contrast the film techniques used in the color film version of _Hound of the Baskervilles_ we watched in class to any of the Film Noir movies we watched in full? Have at least two specific points of comparison.
– We have watched three actors, working with different directors, portray Phillip Marlow – so how you compare and/or contrast any two of the versions of the same character? Do you see some similarities and/or some differences in the way Marlow acts or is shown? Have at least two specific examples using both films.
ased on the four Film Noir detectives we’ve seen in class, what would say was the common style of the characters. This is not about how the movies were made but the look, sound, actions, personality, and so forth characters like Marlowe, Spade, the cops, and/or the suspects. Have at least two examples involving both characters you choose.
– Film Noir is a famous genre for Black and White films – what makes the way the films are made distinct? Have examples of issues like how they use light and shadow, the use of darkness, the creation of mood, of characterization, of creating tension within scenes, and so forth.
– Unlike the Sherlock Holmes stories we know, female characters are extremely important to the Film Noir era stories we’ve studied. There are “good” and “evil” women, and some who may be both. Take any two of the major female characters, such as Brigid, Ann, Vivian, or Helen and discuss their characteristics and how they contribute to the mystery story they are from.
– Discuss the unique use, though almost all of the film, of a first person narrative point-of-view in _Lady in the Lake_. What differences from our other films did you see? How, in your mind, did it impact the aesthetics of the film? Or who was Marlow talking to when they used third person? Have at least two specific examples.
These would be answered in multiple paragraph responses. You’ll always need to supply examples and show, not just indicate, your reasoning. And these are topics, not exactly how a question may be stated on an exam.
– Compare and contrast any two of the following Points-of-View: 1st person, 3rd person limited, Omnipresent and/or Omniscient. What does each entail? How are they different? What advantages or disadvantages does the story teller or audience have with each? Provide an example of each from what’s been gone over in class.
Describe Sherlock’s Holmes’ method of investigating and solving the crime in _Hound of the Baskervilles_. Be sure to show at least two specific examples of how he works.
– Explain at least two specific techniques used to tell the story, especially to keep the mystery going, in the version of _Hound of the Baskervilles_ watched in class. These could deal with the use of the camera, flashbacks, voiceover, the narrative point of view, and soon. Have examples.
– In either, but not both, of the two Sherlock’s Holmes stories we’ve studied, explain which two to three clues per case you think were the most important for Holmes solving the crime – and explain why or how they are important.
