Peer Review Article Summary
For your first Peer Review Article Summary, I will guide you with some prompts so you can answer the questions while reading your article.
Research articles use a standard format to clearly communicate information about an experiment/correlational study. A research article usually has seven major sections: Title, Abstract, Introduction, Method, Results, Discussion, and References. I have broken down my prompts to you in those sections.
For the later 2 articles you will provide your own peer review article summary without my help, but I would like the same amount of detail 🙂 If you want to learn more about how to read and write a peer review summary, please see this link here. For more details.
First alway report the APA Citation:

QUESTIONS TO COMPLETE WHILE READING:
Abstract:
- What was the purpose? The abstract indicates there are 5 variables the researchers are interested in, please list all 5 variables found in the abstract:
Introduction:
- Why was there a need to study how people respond psychologically and behaviorally to infectious disease?
- What did the authors cite as typical threat responses, and what shapes people’s threat responses?
- Explain what the pathogen-prevalence hypothesis is, and how it is related to the current study. What does it predict about people with collectivism orientation and its relationship to an individual’s response to disease risk? What does it predict people with Individualistic orientations and response to disease risk?
- The author states the theoretical model used in their study to guide the study is the Protection Motivation Theory. Briefly explain what that model is and why they measured perceived vulnerability and protection efficacy in their study.
- On page 937, they make several predictions. What were the predictions?
Methods:
- How were the 5 variables (the answers you noted in question #1 ) measured. See the methods section for the answer.
Results: Try not to get frustrated with all the numbers, just focus on the main statements found in the results. You are not expected to know how to read the statistics here. Graphs / Figures also help.
- They said they first examined the relationship between individualism and collectivism to perceived vulnerability to Ebola. What was the first finding they discovered on page 938?
- What does Figure 1a show? What was the finding?
- What does Figure 1b show? What was the finding?
- On page 940. How did the authors describe xenophobia as a threat response?
- Figure 2 shows correlations of all
the variables they study (note it’s well beyond the 5 they mention in the
abstract). Hint * look for the biggest number.
- What variable had the strongest correlation to Protection efficacy? What was the correlation?
- What variable had the strongest correlation to Xenophobia? What was the correlation?
Discussion
- What were the most important findings? List at least 2.
- Who showed the most xenophobic reactivity to the threat of Ebola?
- What is one way the authors suggests we can reduce xenophobic reactions?
Self Reflection in Relation to Coronavirus, write 2-3 sentences:
What aspects of this study might you find useful to the current Coronavirus pandemic. Do you think there is xenophobic behaviors in NYC? Why or why not? Is there a variable worth examining? How convincing are the results? Are any of the results surprising?
